Relationships: Interstitial ConnectionsRelationships is a cycle of exhibits and interdisciplinary educational programs pairing studio arts faculty from the department of Art and Design with colleagues from across the Iowa State University campus. The exhibit will run from August 23 to December 18.
Pamela White, College of Human Sciences Dean, along with the faculty in Integrated Studio Arts invite you to join them in celebrating the exhibition Relationships: Interstitial Connections at the Brunnier Art Museum. Enjoy light refreshments, conversation, and a brief program at 5:15 with remarks from Dean White, College of Design Dean Luis Rico-Gutierrez, and faculty exhibition coordinator Ingrid Lilligren.
The essence of any successful relationship is a mutual outlook. Steven Herrnstadt, professor in Art and Design, James Bloedel, professor and former chair of Biomedical Science, and Mani Mina, lecturer in Computer Engineering, certainly have just that in their shared interest in healing, life, and appreciation for nature. This discussion will focus on the interdisciplinary nature of and central themes in Herrnstadt's art while emphasizing the interconnectedness of life.
The collaborative artist team BOKA, comprised of artists JoAnn Boehmer and April Katz, Associate Professor in Integrated Studio Arts, along with Janette Thompson, professor in Natural Resource Ecology and Management, will discuss their research and creative relationship. The focus of this participatory discussion will be on the interpretations of roots, both representational and symbolic, as a way to explore physical and social environments.
In both visual art and jazz, interpretation is heavily influenced by the
individual creator, never creating the same work of art or playing the same
composition exactly the same way twice. The maker and performers mood,
personal experience, and interactions can alter the outcome, whether
furniture or music. Join Mark Chidister, associate professor in Art and
Design, and James Bovinette, associate professor in Music, as they talk
about the relationship and philosophical similarities of art and jazz.
Mark Chidister, associate professor in Art and Design, will provide a
first-hand account of a furniture makers journey through the worlds of
design and technique, and will give the audience a unique look into the life
and creative process of a maker.
Barbara Caldwell, associate professor in Art and Design, will share images and narrative related to her current installation, Touchstones of Transformation: Navigating the Process of Change. This interactive presentation will highlight significant aspects of Barbara's development as an artist, teacher, and holistic growth mentor. ISU Professor Emeritus Corly Brooke will share her perspectives on human growth and transformation and how they intersect in Barbara's work.
