Culture and Community:
Iowas Identity in the Twenty-First Century

Des Moines, Iowa Joseph Kupfer, director of the Center for Excellence in Arts and Humanities (CEAH) and university professor of philosophy at Iowa State University, has been invited to speak at the closed session meeting of the Iowa Soybean Associations Ag-Urban Leadership Initiative, Thursday, November 20th, in Des Moines.

The Ag-Urban Leadership Initiative is a program for established leaders who realize that Iowa is strongest when it approaches challenges, options, and opportunities with a common understanding. The four main objectives to be discussed in this session include: What makes us Iowans? What influences our identity today and shapes it tomorrow? How do these things affect our relationships with resources, cities, rural communities and one another, and a look at how leaders balance and bring together cultural and identity resources to build stronger communities. Kupfer will present Culture and Community: Iowas Identity in the Twenty-First Century. CEAH, through its work in promoting interdisciplinary faculty research, and the Imagining Iowa program will be especially relevant.

Iowa State University is a member of Imagining America, a national consortium of colleges and universities, whose mission is to strengthen the public role and democratic purposes of the humanities, arts, and design. The Imagining Iowa program is an interdisciplinary approach to exploring aesthetic, ethical, environmental, and social concerns arising from international bio-renewable initiatives in Iowa and the Midwest.

The Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities, based at Iowa State University, facilitates collaboration and conversation across disciplines and strengthens the integration of the arts, humanities and sciences. The Center offers a wide range of programs and events that bring people together for fellowship and intellectual exchange.
