Prereq: Third year classification in veterinary medicine; limited to 28 students designated by lottery. Elective course focuses on the fundamentals of performing and interpreting abdominal ultrasonography in the small animal patient. Veterinary Clinical Science 409X. Small Animal Clinical Oncology. Cr. 2. May be taken more than once for credit. Clinical rotation for 2 students for 2 weeks with the Oncology Service. Students are responsible for seeing oncology cases with the clinician on duty. Veterinary Clinical Sciences 441X. Canine Rehabilitation. Cr. var. May be taken more than once for credit. Prereq: Students must be currently enrolled in the veterinary professional curriculum. Proof of rabies prophylaxis and a protective titer. Students will be instructed in the basic principles of canine rehabilitation. A licensed veterinary technician also licensed in canine rehabilitation will instruct and supervise the student in the performance of rehabilitation techniques; documentation of therapy and patients’ performance; animal handling; and client communication. The students will be exposed to research projects in the unit. Offered on a satisfactory-fail grading basis only. Veterinary Clinical Sciences 461X. Advanced Small Animal Internal Medicine. Cr. 1. Prereq: V C S 444. A discussion of advanced topics in small animal internal medicine, including topics that were not covered in V C S 444 and continuing discussion about complex topics that were introduced in V C S 444. Introductory course in livestock (beef, dairy, swine, sheep and equine) nutrition and feeding principles. Students will apply scientific facts and principles to problem-solving procedures in determining nutritious and economical livestock feeding programs. Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine 402X. Advanced Dairy Production Informatics. Cr. 1. Prereq: VDPAM is recommended or permission of instructor. Advanced coverage of concepts related to collection, manipulation, analysis and reporting of information used by dairy farms and their consults. Hands on experience with Dairy Comp 305 and PCDart as well as other dairy management and information software. Course will integrate this data with dairy operations’ financial situations. Nonmajor graduate credit Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Science 419X Advanced Swine Production Informatics. Cr. 1. Prereq: VDPAM 309X. Holtkamp. Advanced coverage of concepts related to collection, manipulation, analysis and reporting of information used by swine production companies. Production, financial, diagnostic and clinical data will be covered in the course. Hands-on experience with computer software and information systems used in swine production will be provided. Optional field trip. Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Science 456X Veterinary Diagnostic Lab Methods & Applications. Cr. 1, Prereq: VM3 or VM4 classification.. Jordan, Yoon. The objective of the course is to enhance the understanding of current diagnostic methods utilized in diagnostic laboratories for the diagnosis of animal diseases. The value and usefulness of diagnostic information will be studies along with the mechanism by which specimens are tested and diagnostic information is collected. There will be a hands-on component to the course as the structure permits. Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine 476X. Food Animal Field Service. Cr. 2. May be taken more than once for credit. Prereq: Fourth Year classification in Veterinary Medicine or Permission of Instructor. Elective course in food animal field services. Students will assist the University veterinarian in delivering health care production management services to the ISU livestock farms and other selected farms in the region. Focus will be on delivery of individual animal care and establishment of best practices for herd management of dairy production systems at the university and in the region. Advanced coverage in investigating dairy herd problems relating to milk quality or nutrition. Milk quality and nutrition troubleshooting will be taught through the combination of lecture and on-farm investigations.
