Early philological history of German as it separates from Indo-European, development through the Old High and Middle High German periods, including the earliest written evidence. Influence of Martin Luther on modern German; theory of the development of Yiddish; modern sociolinguistic treatment of German outside of Germany, particularly in the United States, e.g., in the Amana Colonies as well as among the Old Order Amish.
