Academic Probation

In July 2007, the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate approved the following additional academic probation policies relating to students who attend Iowa State during the summer session.

  1. Students who are not in dismissal status at the beginning of summer session cannot be dismissed at the end of summer session regardless of their academic performance.
  2. All students who attend summer session will have their academic status reassessed at the end of summer based on the combined grade summaries of the previous term of attendance and summer term.  Academic status in fall will be based on the resulting GPA.
  3. Summer alone cannot determine academic status in the fall.  Students who initiate enrollment at Iowa State during the summer will not be coded for probation (either W or P) regardless of academic performance in summer.

These are in addition to the policy that students who have attempted or earned at least 75 credits must maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average and the Summer Option policy for students who were in dismissal status at the end of spring semester.

The combined grade point summary (summer term + preceding term) will not appear on the student’s grade report or the permanent record.  This information will be available through your college office or Academic Standards Committee.

If you have questions about this contact Dayle Nickerson or Jane Jacobson, co-chairs Academic Probation Implementation Committee.
