Courses Primarily for Undergraduate Students
Ital 101. Elementary Italian
I. (4-1) Cr. 4. F. Introduction to basic grammar and structure
of the language; use of audio materials supplemented by graded reading
within the context of Italian culture. Especially recommended as
a second area of language study for majors in French and Spanish.
Credit by examination in the Department of Foreign Languages and
Literatures for courses numbered 101, 102, 201, and 202 is available
only to students who are not currently enrolled in the course. Credit
by examination for other courses in the Department is normally not
available.
Ital 102. Elementary Italian II. (4-1)
Cr. 4. S. Prereq: 101. Introduction to basic grammar and
structure of the language; use of audio materials supplemented by
graded readings within the context of Italian culture. Especially

numbered 101, 102, 201, and 202 is available only to students who
are not currently enrolled in the course. Credit by examination
for other courses in the Department is normally not available.

Cr. 1 to 6 each time taken. Prereq: 6 credits in Italian and
permission of department chair. No more than 9 credits in Ital
490 may be counted toward graduation. Designed to meet the needs
of students who seek work in areas other than those in which courses
are offered, or who desire to integrate a study of literature or
language with special problems in major fields. Nonmajor graduate
credit.
