Open Forum (second of three)
09-06-06, 70 minutes, approximately 90 people attended
Issues brought forward during this open forum are grouped by
whether they relate to the concept of the alternative budget model,
how an alternative budget model would be implemented or if they are
outside of the scope of a budget model.
Concept:
- Subvention? As a professor, that means help to get
published.
- Concern model for graduate student 75/25. Concern agronomy
students taking courses in statistics and other fields have the
potential to receive lower quality education.
- Other side. Appreciate make more transparent. Would like
an adjuster on space charges. Center for Technology in Teaching is
dungeon level work space. Use technology in education, which is
unusual. Compare to other space with help from alumni. Concern may
need to close center if keep cost that's now allocated.
- What does it mean "Common Goods Services?" A glossary
would help.
- Are placeholders on Web?
Implementation Issues/Technical to Budget Model:
- Inverse makes sense go where monies are undergraduate
student credit hours weighted for cost of instruction and tuition
differential -- does that mean students underwrite other students?
This seems to penalize effective departments and over charge some
students for the same services.
- How is indirect cost recovery handled with grant vs other
income?
- Indirect cost recovery?
- Flow on multidisciplinary units?
Tangential -- Outside budget model but bought to light by it:
- Has committee thought how much bigger the university can
get? Is this a matter of reslicing a cake or building a bigger
cake?
- How weave in faculty quality and business accountability
model?
- How get rid of space?
- Quality issue with type of research: theoretical,
epistemological.
- Interdisciplinary research?
