The desert region is sometimes called the "warm desert," in reference to the fact that winters here are warm, with air temperatures seldom falling below freezing. This is reflected by the presence of many evergreen species and the darker green color they give the desert relative to the dominant gray-greens of the desert scrub, or "cold desert" region.
