What kind of weather can I expect?

In 2004, Iowa temperatures in January, February, March and December ranged from a minimum of -22°F to a high of 67°F. The snowfall ranged from of 5 to 19 inches per snowstorm.

Some of the winter events that you might encounter include winter storms, heavy snowfall, extreme cold, sleet, freezing rain, frosts/freezes, and blizzards. Freezing rain is rain that freezes when it hits the ground and creates a coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees, and power lines. Sleet is rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground causes moisture on roads to freeze and become slippery.

These can result in dangerous situations. Blocked roads, downed power lines with power outages, hypothermia, slippery driving and walking conditions, and closed highways are a few results of winter storms. Extreme cold can create medical emergencies for susceptible persons such as those without shelter or in poorly heated homes. Secondarily, the risk for fires and carbon monoxide poisoning increase in winter due to inappropriate use of various alternative methods of heating.
