What is the temperature anyway?

A problem for some newcomers from countries outside of the U.S.A. is the use of the Fahrenheit (F) scale rather than the Celsius (C) scale.

John is most familiar with the Celsius scale. When the radio says the temperature is 5°F. His mind tells him that it is still not too cold—it doesn’t yet seem like below-freezing temperature because he is so used to “0 degrees” as indicating freezing. In reality, though, the temperature is far below freezing.

The conversion is as follows: (F=Temperature in Fahrenheit; C=Temperature in Celsius)

  • F = (C * 1.8) + 32
  • C = (5/9) * (F – 32)
