QUIZZES:

I will give a 50 minute quiz twice a week on Fridays. To see timing of each, please look at the tentative calendar. Note that the one right before spring break is on Thursday. The problems in these quizzes will be from the problem sets I will be posting. To see what each quiz covers, you should also look at problem sets. There is NO MAKE UP for any of the quizzes. Instead, when calculating quiz averages, I will not count the worst quiz grade. Missed quizzes will be counted as zero. In quizzes, calculators will NOT be allowed.

EXAMS:

There will be a ninety minute departmental Midterm Exam and a two hour departmental Final Exam. The departmental Midterm is on Thursday, February 28, 8:00 pm – 9:30 pm at Kildee 125. The time for the final exam will be announced later. These exams will consist of two parts. In one part, calculators will be allowed and in the other, they won’t. A graphing calculator is recommended for this course. However, you are required to show your work in the exams. Answers without work will not get any credit.

MAKEUP EXAM:

Make-up exams will only be given at the discretion of the instructor.  You can make-up an exam only if an emergency causes you to miss a test. You must contact me (e-mail or in person) within 24 hours of the absence in order to be able to make up the test. Make-up exams will only be given in the case of severe illness, family emergency, or another extreme situation. Documentation must be provided at the time of the make-up exam. Such documentation depends on the reason for the absence - I will let you know when you contact me what you need to bring.

ALEKS:

The ALEKS calculus pre-assessment tests your readiness for calculus. To succeed in calculus you need to have mastered a number of elementary topics: Real numbers, equations and inequalities, linear and quadratic functions, exponents and polynomials, rational expressions, radical expressions, exponentials and logarithms, and geometry and trigonometry. Some students get into trouble trying to do calculus with only a shaky grasp of these essential prerequisites. The ALEKS system is an adaptive engine for assessment and learning. It will identify any weaknesses in your preparation, and give you customized tutorials and practice to bring you up to speed.

For more information on ALEKS, signing up and taking the pre-assessment test, please visit http://orion.math.iastate.edu/calculus/ALEKS.html as soon as possible.

During the registration process, you will need to enter our course ID: GTENA-TGD3W
