We encourage you to consider Iowa State University for graduate study in Astronomy and Astrophysics. We have a broad range of research interests yet are a small enough program that we can provide individualized attention throughout your graduate career at Iowa State.
Ph.D. in Astrophysics
The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers two graduate degrees that are relevant for students interested in Ph.D. work in astrophysics. Generally, students who are interested in astronomy will seek a Ph.D. in Astrophysics. Students eager to join the field of particle astrophysics generally seek the Ph.D. (or M.S.) in Physics, but follow a very similar program.
Further information about application to the Ph.D. graduate program, admissions, and degree requirements can be found here.
Research Masters of Science in Astrophysics
The Astronomy faculty at Iowa State University is recruiting a number of potentially strong students for our 2-year research Masters degree in astrophysics. Students accepted into this program will start an astrophysics research project during their first year in the program (see this page for samples). In addition, students will develop a strong foundation in astrophysics by taking astronomy and physics courses and serving as TAs for astronomy (and possibly physics) courses.
The goal is that by the end of the 2-year program, participating students will have completed a state-of-the-art research project. In doing so, they will acquire useful skills related to that project, co-author a publishable paper, and will acquire a strong background that will prepare them for continued studies in astronomy, physics, or related fields, at Iowa State, or another institution of their choice. We anticipate that this program may be of particular interest to those who have a physics major but are interested in continuing in astronomy, those with an astronomy major whose physics background needs some filling in, or those who are not sure whether they wish to pursue the PhD for a career in astronomy research. This 2-year program differs from the standard graduate program in physics and astronomy at ISU in that students will not be taking the physics qualifying exam. They will be advised from the beginning by members of the astronomy/astrophysics faculty so as to facilitate early entry into a research program.
