Fundamentals of Public Speaking
General Information about SpCm 212 for Fall and Spring 2012-13, Sections 1 through 30
- This is a Lecture/Lab Course that meets for 50 minutes 3
times a week on MWF. Some days are Lecture days [they always
meet at either 2 or 3 depending on your lab section]. Some days
are LAB days [these times vary
from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. depending
on which Lab you registered for]. Be sure to attend the LECTURE
section at either 2 or 3 on the first two days of class in August for Fall;
in January for Spring term. No Lab sections in Pearson will meet on those first two days of class
- If you are in Labs 1-14, or section 30 you will attend
the 2 o'clock
lecture in MacKay Hall on the first day of class and on all lecture days during the
semester. We'll help clarify it for you at the first class
section.
- If you are in Labs 15-29 you will attend the 3 o'clock lecture in MacKay Hall on the first day of class and on all lecture days during the semester. We'll help clarify it for you at that first session.
- Keeping track of the Lecture/LAB schedule will be important,
so pay close attention to the syllabus you receive the first day of
class.

- The
First week of class we will have Lecture in MacKay on Monday and
Wednesday. On Friday, you will attend class at the time of your
Lab Section in Pearson Hall.

Required Texts
1) Electronic version of Stephen E. Lucas, The Art of Public Speaking, 11th edition. McGraw-Hill, 2012. The access card for the book is available at the book store for $95.60 or you may purchase the book through our course Blackboard site for ~$70.00 [click on “Background Survey” to launch the purchase process]. You are welcome to purchase a hardcover version of the book as well, but all students will need the ebook (current hardcover cost: ~$145.)
2) Amy R. Slagell, Speech Communication 212, Fall 2012 Workbook - This
class will use Blackboard. You'll find that Blackboard has a lot
of versatility for keeping you organized. On you site you can keep your
own to-do list
and create a list of bookmarks to your favorite websites as well as
keep up with due dates, grades and assignments. You can
log in with the log on information you use to check your email on
CyMail. You will not have access to the Blackboard site until just a
few
days before classes begin when sections are officially enrolled.
- This class offers the opportunity to learn about and practice competent public speaking behaviors so you can expand your repertoire as a speaker and be successful across a range of speaking situations. There are three major and three minor presentations in the course and plenty of opportunities to learn from observing the choices made by other speakers and working on various exercises.
