Major Ideology within Puritan Sermons
- Literalism and Millenialism:
the Bible can be believed and the promises in it to Israel apply to all people's
and governments
- the Divine Plan of History
gave the Chosen People a Chosen Mission: there is a covenant between God
and this people [our going into the wilderness imitates that of Israel]
- Puritan Work Ethic a sense
of duty was buttressed by a sense of guilt when they failed to hold up their
end of the covenant. Part of which is the duty to use to the fullest
extent the skills God gave him.
- faith in progress and the
perfectibility of society
- God is especially interested
in us and so is the rest of the world: we are to be an example to the nations.
- We left corruption to find
purity here.
- Man should be in the world,
not of the world. The natural world, our natural tendency is
toward evil. Yet God's creations are wonderful and are to be enjoyed.
