& Academic Administrative Experience
1984-2002. Instructor
with various writing and English-as-a-second-language programs,
including ISU Freshman Composition Program; ISU Advanced Writing
Program; ISU Intensive English and Orientation Program; ISU
Continuing Education Program; Des Moines Area Community College
Continuing Education Program in Ames, Ankeny, Des Moines,
and the Mitchelville State Penitentiary for Women.
Taught writing the research article for
ESL students (English 101D), freshman composition and multicultural
freshman composition (English 104), business writing (English
302), rhetorical analysis (English 310), technical writing
(English 314), editing for ISU faculty and staff, and the
range of English-as-a-second-language courses (composition,
listening, reading, speaking--at multiple levels).
September 1999-May 2003. Assistant/Associate
Director of Assessment and Curriculum, Multicultural Learning
Community, ISU.
Assisted in administering a learning community
whose primary objectives were to improve (1) academic performance
of all community members, (2) retention of students of color,
and (3) understanding among students from a wide range of
racial, ethnic, and class backgrounds. Served as liaison
among the English, minority student affairs, and residence
departments, and the crossdisciplinary studies program.
Assisted Director of Curriculum in various capacities: implementing
a pluralist curriculum in an overwhelmingly White, midwestern
university; assessing community success qualitatively and
quantitatively, by means of focus groups, interviews, and
surveys; recruiting members; writing reports for administrators
charged with funding decisions; creating public relations
materials; conceiving, designing, and maintaining the community
web site; supervising ten undergraduate mentors and interns
to be mentors; supervising five graduate student teaching
assistants; creating and maintaining archive. Traveled nationally
and internationally to speak about multicultural pedagogy
and program assessment.
September 1998-May
1999. Director of Accounting Department Writing Laboratory,
ISU.
Installed writing laboratory. Supervised
four undergraduate writing mentors. Created training materials,
chaired biweekly staff meetings, worked closely with accounting
staff to create rhetorically informed writing assignments.
Presented rhetoric seminars to large lecture classes in
accounting.
