TESL/Applied Linguistics: Ph.D. Students

 

Ghinwa AlameenGhinwa Alameen holds an MA degree in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Iowa State, and a graduate diploma in Linguistics from Damascus University. Ghinwa has taught EFL classes in Syria, and linguistics classes at Baath University, Syria. Her research interests include CALL, multimedia listening and speaking, pronunciation, and material design. Ghinwa has presented in TSLL and MIDTESOL, and published in TESL-EJ. She is currently teaching non-native writing classes and developing a website to teach French in a Quebecois context.

AdolfoAdolfo A. Carrillo Cabello holds an MA in TESL from Minnesota State University, Mankato. He has taught Spanish beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in MSU, Mankato, Gustavus Adolphus College, and Iowa State University. His research interests include cross-cultural communication, pragmatics, and materials design in CALL. Adolfo has served as reviewer for two intermediate Spanish textbooks for Vista Higher Learning and for their online program for beginning Spanish as well.

Yoo ReeYoo Ree Chung holds an MATES degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and an M.A. degree in linguistics from Yonsei University, Korea. She has taught ESL listening and reading courses at Iowa State and EFL to children in Korea. She is currently working as a research assistant on the ISU English Placement Test and on an ESL learners' proficiency indicators development project. Her research interests are language assessment and second language acquisition. She is especially interested in the application of technology in ESL speaking assessments.

ElenaElena Cotos holds an MA in Philology from Moldova State University. Elena has served as a Language Tester for the Peace Corps, a Translator/Interpreter for the United Nations, and has taught a vareity of English courses, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking, in both Moldovoa and at Iowa State. Her research interests include CALL, Corpus Linguistics, materials design, technology in L2 teacher education, corpus-based studies of translation, and the application of linguistic theory and technology to translation. Elena has presented at TESOL and TSLL, and developed online materials for the English Listening Lounge.

Lisa ElbertLisa Elbert holds an MA in TESL and an MA in US History, both from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her BA is in Psychology, from Carleton College, where her focus was on linguistics and language acquisition. She is a second-language speaker of Dakota (eastern Sioux), has taught Dakota in Minneapolis and Mendota, and presented at conferences in the US and Canada on the subject of language revitalization and the use of technology. She co-edited the University of Minnesota's Dakota language textbook and wrote an accompanying verb guide and was the principal author of the Dakota Language course website. Her research interests include language evolution, history, etymology, preservation and revitalization of endangered languages, materials development, and use of digital media for language teaching. She also loves learning languages, with 8 or 10 at the moment (including German, Dakota, French, and Russian), and is currently learning Anglo-Saxon. She is a TA for ISUComm and a Research Assistant for World Languages & Cultures in the use and development of Wimba Voice Tools in WebCT.

MajaMaja Grgurovic holds an MA degree in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Iowa State. Maja has taught EFL classes in Serbia and Turkey and ESL listening, reading, and writing classes at ISU. Her research interests include CALL and multimedia listening, software design, and integration of technology into language teaching and teacher education. Maja has presented at CALICO, WorldCALL, TESOL, and TSLL, and published in TESL-EJ , Language Learning and Technology and ReCALL.

Hee Sung JunHee Sung (Grace) Jun holds an MA in TESL from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she taught ESL academic writing to international undergraduate students. Ivon KatzIvon Katz holds an MA degree in Linguistics from Ohio University and a BA degree in Language and Literature from Bard College. He has taught ESL courses in South Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States. He has presented papers at KOTESOL, ThaiTESOL, CamTESOL, and the International TESOL conference, and has been an invited speaker at universities in South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. In addition to pursuing his studies at ISU, he is currently teaching two sections of first-year composition. His research interests include CALL and intercultural pragmatics, computer technology in developing countries, and the use of open-source applications for Internet-based distance education.

Kimberly LeVelleKimberly LeVelle received her MA TESOL degree from Portland State University and a BA degree in Linguistics and Economics from the University of Oregon. She has taught ESL in community outreach programs and worked with students studying to be ESL teachers. She presented at Language Teacher Educators and has co-authored a book chapter in The Handbook of Educational Linguistics (forthcoming). She currently teaches first-year composition at Iowa State University. Her research interests focus on language assessment, particularly on locally developed and in-class assessment, and corpus linguistics in language learning.

Jinrong LiJinrong Li received her MA degree in Applied Linguistics from Beijing Foreign Studies University, where she has taught ESL writintg, listening, reading and speaking courses. She has co-authored two ESL test practice books, and was editor of The Simulated CET-4 Tests. Meanwhile, Jinrong had been working as a conference interpreter for government agencies and international organizations. Her research interests include CALL, second language acquisition issues, and computer-assisted assessment.

AnneAnne O'Bryan received her MA in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Iowa State where she has taught ESL writing, listening, reading and speaking courses, as well as freshmen composition. Her research interests include learner strategies in CALL, the effects of strategy training on CALL use, and the integration of technology into the language classroom. Anne has presented at CALICO, TESOL, EUROCALL and TSLL, conducted introductory CALL workshops at EUROCALL and Iowa State University, published in TESL-EJ, ReCALL, and CALICO Journal (forthcoming), and developed online materials for the English Listening Lounge.

Jim RanalliJim Ranalli has an MA in TEFL/TESL from the University of Birmingham in the U.K. as well as the Cambridge certificate and diploma in English language teaching to adults. He has worked variously as a teacher, teacher trainer, program coordinator and curriculum consultant in Namibia, Korea, Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and the U.S. While completing his doctoral studies, he works in ISU's Intensive English and Orientation Program as coordinator of the Language Learning Center and administrator of the IEOP e-Learning site, and also helps design experimental online courses in technical vocabulary for the Classical Studies program. His research focuses on vocabulary learning strategies and the use of technology for learner training. He has published in CALICO Journal (forthcoming), Computer Assisted Language Learning (forthcoming), CALL-EJ On-Line, and TESL-EJ, and has presented at numerous conferences and workshops.

KarinaKarina Silva holds an MA in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Ohio University. She has taught EFL classes in Brazil and first-year composition classes at ISU. RuslanRuslan Suvorov holds a Master’s degree in TESL/Applied Linguistics from Iowa State University, a Specialist’s degree in English and German from Izmail State Humanities University in Ukraine, and a Specialist’s degree in Economics and Management of Tourism, Hotel and Restaurant Business from Kyiv University of Tourism, Economics and Law in Ukraine. Ruslan has taught EFL classes at Izmail State Humanities University in Ukraine, ESL classes at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, and Reading and Writing classes for IEOP students at Iowa State University. He is currently teaching one section of first-year composition and provides technical support for ISUComm’s Moodle website. His research interests include Language Testing, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL).

ErikErik Voss holds a master's degree in Teaching Swedish as a Second Language from Uppsala University in Sweden and an Advanced Graduate Certificate in Second Language Studies from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Erik has taught Swedish at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota and English as a second language in Illinois, Hawaii, and China. His research interests include CALL, multimedia for language learning and testing, and computer-assisted language testing.

Jing XuJing Xu received his M.A. in ESL from the University of Toledo and his B.A. in English from Shanghai Jiao Tong University of China. Jing worked as an ESL tutor and Education Supervisor at Web International English Training Center in China before he came to the United States for graduate study. At the University of Toledo he taught first-year composition to international students and tutored ESL writing at the Writing Center. Currently at ISU he is teaching two sections of first-year composition course to native-English-speaking students. Jing’s research interests include developing language learning courseware via virtual reality and multi-media technology, applying computer technology to language testing, and evaluating learner performance on CALL.

Peifeng ZhangPeifeng Zhang holds an M.A. degree in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Superior and an M.A. degree in Rhetoric,Composition, and Professional Communication from
Iowa State University. His experiences include teaching first-year composition and working as an instructional support specialist at Iowa State University. Currently, he is a research assistant for the National K-12 Foreign Language Resource Center. His research interests include CALL, intercultural communication, multimedia technologies in second language learning and testing.
