Overview
The Graduate Certificate in TESL consists of two prerequisites and 12 graduate
credits. Courses are designed to provide basic preparation in teaching English
to speakers of other languages in a variety of settings. Students may do a
stand-alone certificate or apply to do a graduate certificate in addition to
the masters or doctoral program.
Certificate Requirements
There are 3 sets of requirements for the certificate:
1. Admissions Standards
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- A GPA of at least 3.0
- For non-native speakers of English a TOEFL score of 600 (PBT) or 250 (CBT)
or 100 (IBT)
- Evidence of good oral and written English communication skills
2. Prerequisites
- An introductory linguistics course (e.g., English/Ling 219 or
English/Ling 511)
- An introductory grammar course (e.g., English 220 or test-out)
3. Courses
- Required: Teaching English as a Second Language: Methods
and Materials (English/Ling 518) (F) Prerequisite: English/Ling
511 or an introductory linguistics course.
Three additional courses chosen from the following:
- Introduction to Computers in Applied Linguistics (English/Ling 510) (F)
- Second Language Assessment (English 519) (3 Cr) (S)
- Literacy: Issues and Methods for nonnative Speakers
of English (English/Lingu 524) (F)
- Methods in Teaching Listening & Speaking Skills to nonnative
Speakers of English (English/Ling 525) (S)
- Supervised Practicum in Teaching English as a Second Language. (English/Ling
588) (3 cr) (F, S, SS)

Application Requirements
Application Deadline: Rolling admission with the application deadline being Monday of the last week of classes of the semester prior to the requested entry term
