Overview
The Graduate Certificate in TES/TEFL can be taken on campus or online.
The certificate consists
of two prerequisites and 12 graduate credits. Courses are designed to provide
basic preparation in teaching English to speakers of other languages in a variety
of settings. Students may do a stand-alone certificate or apply to do a graduate
certificate in addition to the masters or doctoral program.
Certificate Requirements
There are 3 sets of requirements for the certificate:
1. Admissions Standards
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- A GPA of at least 3.0
- For non-native speakers of English a TOEFL score of 600 (PBT) or 250 (CBT)
or 100 (IBT)
- Evidence of good oral and written English communication skills
2. Prerequisites
- An introductory linguistics course (e.g., English/Ling 219 or
English/Ling 511)
- An introductory grammar course (e.g., English 220 or test-out)
3. Courses
- Required: Teaching English as a Second Language: Methods
and Materials (English/Ling 518) (F) Prerequisite: English/Ling
511 or an introductory linguistics course.
Three additional courses chosen from the following:
- Introduction to Computers in Applied Linguistics (English/Ling 510) (F)
- Second Language Assessment (English 519) (3 Cr) (S)
- Literacy: Issues and Methods for nonnative Speakers
of English (English/Lingu 524) (F)
- Methods in Teaching Listening & Speaking Skills to nonnative
Speakers of English (English/Ling 525) (S)
- Supervised Practicum in Teaching English as a Second Language. (English/Ling
588) (3 cr) (F, S, SS)
