Assignments and Projects:

HW 0:

Find a problem from your research area or some other topic of your interest which involves using statistics in computer science research. Write down the problem in words, with reference to the book or paper that you used in finding the problem. Describe the setup, variables involved, data (if it needs to be collected, what type of data are needed and how to collect them) – research question that you want to answer using statistics, and any rough plan about how to carry out the project. Do not worry if you think the problem looks too difficult (we do not have to solve the problem, if you do not want to) – I am doing this to see what type of statistical applications that are of interest to you, and it can become (if you choose to) a term project at the end of this course – if we decide to go for a project instead of a final exam. Try to be as thorough as possible. Feel free to talk to other students, professors (and roommates etc). 

Due date: Jan 23 (Monday) in class.

As some of you pointed out correctly, for second problem the range of values should be x>=b (instead of x>=0) in the description of the pdf of pareto.

Also need a>2.
