Consider a team of which you have been a member (work, social, sport, church, club, etc.). What made the team successful?

2. Basic Team Work Concepts

A team is a group of people working together to accomplish a common task. Six qualities distinguish a team from a simple collection of people:
  1. The team has a definable membership (others identify them as a team).
  2. Members identify themselves as part of a team.
  3. Members share a sense of purpose, have common goals.
  4. Members need each other to accomplish the purpose of the team.
  5. Team members openly and honestly communicate with, influence, and react to each other.
  6. The team has the ability to act as a single organism.
  • Shared Goal
    • a shared sense of a compelling goal that benefits all
    • a goal that can only be accomplished by combining individual actions
  • Clear Roles
    • the team needs the individual contributions of its members
    • members value the contributions of other members
    • members are able to play a number of roles--multi-functionality
  • Open & Honest Communication
    • members engage in frequent communication
    • members are honest and direct with each other

    3. Teams in the United States

    Why business and industry increasingly uses teams as the primary performance unit in the organization.
    • Productivity -- more heads are smarter than one
      • teams represent a broad mix of skill and know-how that might not normally be applied to the task at hand
    • Agility -- flexibility and speed
      • teams can respond more quickly than larger units
      • teams can change their direction and structure as needed
