Strategic Planning

"The process by which the guiding members of an organization envision its future and develop the necessary procedures and operations to achieve that future"

What Strategic Planning Does
It provides both the direction and the energy to move in that direction

The focus is on the process of planning, not on the plan that is produced

Successful strategic planning is characterized by organizational self-examination, confronting difficult choices, and setting priorities

What Strategic Planning is Needed?
Changes in the environment and the clientele served by the organization necessitates a systematic approach to anticipate and respond to these changes so that the organization can more effectively and efficiently meet the needs of its clientele

It is a systematic way for managing and coping with change and coping with the unknown

It involves the belief that the future can be influenced and changed by what we do now. It therefore helps the organization to create its future

More than Envisioning
Strategic planning also requires setting clear goals and objectives which are realistic, objective, and attainable.

Careful implementationo of the plan is critical to the attainment of the goals and objectives (reaching the planned future state) during specified periods of time

Strategic Decisions
Strategic decisions determine what an organization will do

Tactical Decisions
Tactical decisions determine how and when something will be done
