Developing a Common Vocabulary for Community Development


change agents - persons who contribute to shaping changes or transformations that improve their communities' ability to meet the needs of people living there

collaborate - to work together with others in pursuit of a common goal; usually used in a positive way to mean cooperation or partnership

community - people with common interests living within a particular area, such as a town or city; also used to refer to the town, neighborhood, or region itself

community development - programs and processes for improving cities and towns through public/private partnerships, efforts among government officials, citizens, and businesses

decision making - the act or process by which decisions are made

empowerment - when ordinary people feel that they can accomplish project goals for community betterment, even if they do not have official authority or power

extension - educational and technical assistance programs and activities that bring university or government assistance to persons at a distance; training and other programs offered at times and in places that are convenient for people

facilitation - a method for conducting meetings or organizing group activities which encourage participation of all participants, in order to reach goals on which all participants can agree

historical preservation - the protection, care, and redevelopment of buildings, public places, and artifacts of everyday life that are important to understanding the history and culture of a people, place, or region

negotiation - the action or process of conferring with another in order to arrive at the settlement of some matter

outreach - the delivery or extension of information, services, or activities beyond current or usual limits, e.g., seminars or courses for people in a work setting

partnership - a relationship usually involving close cooperation between persons or parties having.ioint rights and responsibilities, such as nongovernmental groups, government officials, and entrepeneurs

public policy - programs supported by governmental officials in a particular topic area such as housing, unemployment assistance, agriculture, etc.

politics - the art or science of government; political actions, practices, or policies; competition 'Detween competing interest groups or individuals for power and leadership

quality of life - refers to the process of describing positive and negative factors affecting human health, material well-being, and happiness

community development resources - include financial, environmental, phvsical, human, and social sources of support for the activities of public/private partnership efforts

risk-taking - knowingly taking action where a potential loss or danger is involved, in order to receive some larger gain or benefit

strategic planning - planning that involves overarching and important strategies that are generally given priority when developing a plan or scheme of development for business or governmental organizations

team - a group of people working together to solve one or more common goals; originally a term from sports but now used to describe a group of people involved in problem-solving in workplaces and within nongovernmental organizations

team building - fostering cohesion, clarifying structure, and reducing conflict among a group of people working on a common task or activity

win-win strategies - strategies designed to allow participants in a negotiation to share benefits; strategies which are opposed to schemes which emphasize competition and expect that one team must win, the other lose

zoning - a system of territorial or community planning used in American cities to determine the uses of land within a particular geographical area, e.g., industrial, residential, and commercial

kolaborovat' - pracovat' spolocne s ostatnimi na dosiahnuti spolocneho ciel'a; zvycajne sa pouziva v pozitivnom zmysle slova kedy znamena spolupracu a partnerstvo;

komunita - l'udia so spolocnimi zaujmami zijuci vramci urciteho uzemia ako je dedina alebo obec; tiez znamena mesto, stvrt' alebo samotny region;

kvalita zivota - ide o proces popisu pozitivneho a negativneho faktorov ovplyvnujucich l'udske zdravie, materialny blahobyt a spokojnost'

ochrana historickych pamiatok - ochrana, starostlivost' a obnova budov, verejnych miest a artefaktov kazdodenneho zivota, ktore su dolezite pre porozumenie historie a kultury lsudi, miest, alebo regionu;

partnerstvo - vzt'ah, ktoreho obsahom zvacsa byva uzka spolupraca medzi osobami alebo stranami so spolocnymi pravami a zodpovednost'ami ako su nevladne skupiny, vladni uradnici a podnikatelia;

podpora (pomocka) - metoda vedenia schodzi alebo organizovania skupinovych podujati, ktore urahcuju ucast' vsetkych pritomnych so zamerom dosiahnut' ciele, na ktorych sa ucastnici dohodnu;

politika - umenie alebo veda ako vladnut'; politicke akcie, praktiky alebo programy; konkurencia medzi zaujmovimi skupinami alebo jednotlivcami o moc a vodcovstvo;

poradenstvo - programy a cinnost' vzdelavacej a technickej pomoci, ktore prinasaju l'ud'om pomoc z univerzit alebo vladnych organizacii na dial'ku; skolenia a ine programy ponukane v casoch a miestach, ktore su pre rudi vyhodnejsie;

poslovia zmeny - osoby, ktore prispievaju k formovaniu zmien alebo transformacii, ktore zlepsuju schopnost' ich komunity vyhoviet' potrebam rudi, ktori ju obyvaju;

riskovanie - vedome sa podujat' na cinnost', kde je mozna strata alebo nebezpecenstvo, s cierom ziskatf vacsi prinos alebo zisk

rozhodovanie - akt alebo proces, pocas ktoreho sa robia rozhodnutia;

rozvoj komunity - programy a postupy na zlepsenie zivota dedin a miest prostrednictvom verejno-sukromnych partnerstiev; aktivity medzi vladnymi uradnikmi, obcanmi a podnikatel'kymi objektami;

strategie obojstrannej vyhry - strategie, ktore umoznuju ucastnikom vyjednavania zdiel'at' prinos spolocne; strategie rozdielne od schem, ktore zdoraznuju konkurenciu, a v ktorich sa ocakava vihra jedneho z timov

strategicke planovanie - planovanie, ktore sa tika prekonania a dolezitych strategii ktorym sa davaju vacsie priority pri vytvarani planu aiebo schemy rozvoja pre podnikatel'sku sferu alebo vidane organizacie

tim - skupina l'udi upracujuca spolocne na rieseni jedneho alebo viacerych spolocnych ciel'ov; povodne termin zo sportu, ale v sucasnosti sa pouziva na popis skupiny l'udi

uzemne planovanie - system uzemneho alebo obecneho planovania pozzivany v Americkych mestach s ciel'om urcit' sposob vyuzivania pody vramci danej geografickej oblasti, napr. priemyselnej, rezidencnej a komercnej.

verejna politika - programy podporovane vladnymi uradnikmi v ramci nejakej specifickej prob ematiky ako napr. byvanie, pomoc nezamestnanym, pol'nohospodarstvo, a pod.;

vyjednavanie - akcia alebo proces vzajomneho dojednania so zamerom dospiet' k urovnanie nejakej zalezitosti; zapojenych do riesenia uloh na pracoviskach a v neviadnych organizaciach

zdroje pre rozvoj komunit - zahfnaju financne, ekologicke, fyzicke, humanne a socialne zdroje pre podporu cinnosti verejno-sukromneho partnerstva

zostavenie timu - posilnenie jednoty, priehFadnej sturktury a zmensovania konfliktu medzi skupinou l'udi pracujucich na spolosnej ulohe alebo cinnosti
