Banana-Kelly Development Corporation, Bronx, New York - activities to improve housing, industry, small business, and social services in a low income New York City neighborhood. This non-profit corporation was started by residents of this neighborhood and now draws technical assistance and financial support from foundations as well as the city, state, and national government. It is a model in the U.S. for how local people can lead community development projects.

Correctionville, Iowa - is a typical small (pop. 897) town which is going through economic change. Community development activities began with a public meeting attended by 165 residents. Committees were established to accomplish the following objectives: attract new businesses to the area, improve the town's appearance, encourage citizens to shop in the town, and provide town residents with more recreational opportunities.

Leadership Training In Council Bluffs, Iowa - a program of seminars designed to encourage business and nongovernmental group leaders to take leadership roles in local government. Materials and speakers increase awareness and knowledge about economic and social conditions affecting this city in western lowa. Held every year, the training program consists of an introductory seminar, followed by 7 monthly meetings.

Queens Center For Culture & The Arts, Queens, New York - involves the renovation of a historic building, the city hall of the town of Flushing which has existed since the 19th century. Nongovernmental organizations in Flushing, which is now part of Queens county, started the project. Now it has gained substantial technical and financial assistance (e.g., for zoning requirements) from the county government, the larger city of New York, and state and national agencies charged with responsibility for arts and historical preservation. Today this beautiful building is used as a museum during the day and for music and dance performances in the evening.
