2. Access to Additional Electronic Journals in ScienceDirect
3. Recent Additions to the General Collection
6. Free Access to Nucleic Acids Symposium Series
7. Who's Publishing in BBMB, EEOB, and GDCB?
The Library's annual electronic learning festival will be held on Wednesday, October 5 from 3:00 - 6:00 pm in the Parks Library Reference Area. You are welcome to come and go as you please. No pre-registration is required, and there will be refreshments and prizes. This event gives us the opportunity to showcase databases and various library services. There will be a mini-seminars (20 minutes) about how to do cited reference searching (using the Web of Science), and there will be demonstrations of the Library's new public scanner. I will be available to answer any questions you might have about searching databases or locating resources relevant to your research or teaching. As the librarian for your department, one of my goals is to meet more faculty members and students within EEOB, GDCB, and BBMB. Please stop by if you have a few moments.
Earlier this summer, Parks Library
gained access to additional titles in ScienceDirect. This came to be as a result
of our collaboration with the libraries at the University of Iowa and the University
of Northern Iowa. When one institution has a subscription to a Science Direct
title (either
in print or electronic), the other institutions also gain online access. Titles
include: Biology Of The Cell, Biotechnology Advances, Cellular Signaling,
Ecological Engineering, Ecological Indicators, Experimental Gerontology, Gene
Expression Patterns, Infection Genetics And Evolution, Journal Of Biochemical
And Biophysical Methods, Journal Of Steroid Biochemistry & Molecular Biology,
and Molecular Genetics & Metabolism.
Reminders: When searching for journals, be sure to check two places. Check the library catalog and search by "Serial Title". If you don't find the journal in the catalog, check the e-Journals & e-Books list. If you don't find it either place, you place requests for journal articles via interlibrary loan.
Also, when it appears we have online access to a journal and the link doesn't work, please let me know. Because of the large number of electronic subscriptions, It is impossible for the Library to check ALL of the journal titles to make sure they are working. If a link doesn't work, do not assume that the library doesn't have access to the journal. In some cases, vendors change the links and don't notify us. Please send me an email if you encounter broken links, and I will be happy to help resolve the problem.

Immunome Research (http://www.immunome-research.com/)
From the journal's about page: "Immunome Research is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal integrating traditional laboratory research with the latest technologies, including genomics, bioinformatics and mathematical modelling.
Immunome Research is a journal of the International Immunomics Society (IIMMS). The journal aims to provide a focal point for the field of Immunomics, which lies at the intersection between traditional laboratory research and the latest research technologies. It thereby includes the sub-speciality immunoinformatics, as well as the application of large-scale genomics to the immune system. Rapidly expanding areas of particular interest include the predicting of MHC-peptide binding, mathematical modelling of viral/host interactions, and the use of gene expression arrays to model immune system pathways."
PLoS Pathogens (http://pathogens.plosjournals.org/)
The first issue is scheduled for release at the end of September.
From the journal's about page: "Bacteria, fungi, parasites, prions and viruses cause a plethora of diseases that have important medical, agricultural, and economic consequences. Moreover, the study of microbes continues to provide novel insights into such fundamental processes as the molecular basis of cellular and organismal function. PLoS Pathogens reflects the full breadth of research in these areas by publishing outstanding original articles that significantly advance the understanding of pathogens and how they interact with their host organisms. PLoS Pathogens provides immediate free access to all content, ensuring that authors reach the widest possible audience as soon as a manuscript is published. Topics include (but are not limited to) adaptive and innate immune defenses as well as pathogen countermeasures, emerging pathogens, evolution, genomics and gene regulation, model host organisms, pathogen-cell biology, pathogenesis, prions, proteomics and signal transduction, rational vaccine design, structural biology, and virulence factors."
The Nucleic Acids Symposium Series consists of the proceedings of the Symposium on Nucleic Acids Chemistry held annually in Japan. The proceedings are freely available on the Web: http://nass.oxfordjournals.org/

For those of you interested in ornithology,
be sure to check out the digital collections
(http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/) at the University of Wisconsin. The Digital
Library for the Decorative Arts and Material Culture (http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/DLDecArts/Browse.html)
contains a number of digitized rare books related to ornithology. Many of these
are multi-volume works. The images are quite stunning. This ivory-billed
woodpecker is from "American ornithology; or The natural history of
the birds of the United States."
The History of Science and Technology (http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/HistSciTech/Browse.html) collection is also worth browsing.
Avibase - The World Bird Database (http://www.bsc-eoc.org/avibase/avibase.jsp)
"Avibase is an extensive database
information system about all birds of the world, containing over 2 million records
about 10,000 species and 22,000 subspecies of birds, including distribution
information, taxonomy, synonyms in several languages and more. This site is
managed by Denis Lepage and hosted by Bird Studies Canada, the Canadian copartner
of Birdlife International."
