The library has recently acquired a subscription to Birds of North America Online. The Birds of North America Online (BNA Online) provides detailed scientific information for each of the 716 species of birds nesting in the USA and Canada. This is an online project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. BNA Online is updated frequently, and it includes image and video galleries showing behaviors, habitat, nests, eggs and nestlings, and recordings of bird songs and calls. You can find this listed in the catalog or the Indexes and Abstracts list. The Library also owns the print version (QL681 B57x 1992). The print version of BNA was completed in 2002, a joint 10 year project of the American Ornithologists' Union, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the Academy of Natural Sciences.

5. Are You Teaching a Class Next Semester?

If so, consider including a library/research-oriented assignment in your syllabus. I recently gave a presentation to Dr. Rob Wallace's Biological Evolution class. Dr. Wallace's students are writing research papers this semester. My presentation included a review of databases relevant to their topics, search techniques, and other resources relevant to evolution and ecology. I concluded class by giving a two question "quiz" with the following questions: 1. List 2 things you learned in class today, and 2. List 1 or 2 things that you still don't understand about research or using the library. The following are actual student comments about this class session:

If you are overwhelmed at the thought of grading research papers, consider including some shorter assignments that require students to utilize library resources. There are a number of worthy exercises that students can complete in order to learn more about the vast array of information resources. I would be more than happy to meet with you to discuss your ideas.
