I. And the survey
said. . .
- Survey Questions
- Which of the following resources
have you used?
- Which of the sources in the
above list do you utilize most frequently?
- Survey

II. Parks Library Resources for
Animal Science (all are listed in the "Indexes
& Abstracts" section of the Library's website)
- NOTE: You
may request books, journal articles, conference proceedings, etc. that the
Library does not own from Interlibrary Loan. From Library homepage: Service
Areas >>>>Request Forms>>>>Click on "Interlibrary
Loan" form. (Fast and free!!)
- Off-campus Access: All of the
resources mentioned below are available off-campus. You will need a Library
PIN number.
A. FoodnetBASE
- What: Collection of food
science full-text scientific handbooks published by CRC Press. There
are currently 282 titles!!
- Several titles under "Meats"
- Advanced Technologies for
Meat Processing; Food Safety Control in the Poultry Industry; HACCP in
the Meat Industry; Halal Food Production; Improving the Safety of Fresh
Meat; Lawrie's meat science, Seventh Edition; Meat Processing: Improving

C. CAB Abstracts (stands
for Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau)
- What: Comprehensive database
that covers: agriculture; animal and veterinary sciences; environmental sciences;
human health, food and nutrition; leisure and tourism; microbiology and parasitology;
plant sciences. It is the most comprehensive database for agriculture.
- Coverage: Covers over 9,000
journals, books and conference proceedings. Includes international
publications.
- Dates: 1910 - present
- Other: Current license only allows
8 simultaneous users. Can easily export records to EndNote.
- Search tips:
- Consider alternate spellings
(e.g. color or colour, behavior or behaviour).
- Use the thesaurus to identify
additional search terms and look at the descriptors/identifiers in the
complete record. For example:
- (pigmeat or pork) and
meat quality retrieves 2526 records
- pork and meat quality
retrieves 2441 records
- Can search simultaneously with
AGRICOLA.
D. Web of Knowledge (Note: The
Web of Knowledge interface changed on February 3, 2008!)
- What: A
suite of databases (The ISU subscription includes: Web of Science, Current
Contents Connect, ISI Proceedings, Biosis Previews, Journal Citation Reports).
It also includes two analytical tools: Journal Citation Reports, Essential
Science Indicators). Also, click on "Additional Resources" to see
links to other websites.
- Features: Create
an account to save searches and set up citation alerts.
1. Web
of Science
- What: Consists
of the Science Citation Index Expanded (ISU subscription covers 1945-present.
Do not have access from data from 1900-1944); Social Sciences Citation
Index (1956-present); Arts & Humanities Citation Index (1975-present)
- Indexes over 6,650 major journals
across 150 scientific disciplines.
- The
Thomson Scientific Journal Selection Process - At the bottom of this essay,
there is information about how to recommend a journal for coverage in the
Web of Science or submit a journal for evaluation.
- Recorded training for the Web
of Science - http://scientific.thomson.com/support/recorded-training/wos/
- Searching the Web of Science
- topic searching or cited reference
searching
- use the "author index"
to find variations of author name (e.g. Sebranek, J and Sebranek, JG)
- Default sort is "latest
date". Can change to "publication year"
- Refine results allows you
to narrow your results by a variety of ways.
- Click on article title to
view abstract. Note the links to: References, Related Records, and the
journal's impact factor in the Journal Citation Reports.
- Can "Analyze Results"
and "Create Citation Report"
- More information about cited
reference searching - Cited
Reference Searching Guide - by Lorrie Pellack
- Can easily export records
to Endnote.
2. Web of Knowledge (all database
search)-- CAUTION: It isn't clear how the database interprets search terms
in an "all databases" search. For example, "food additives"
retrieves records without this phrase. Yet, specific food additives are mentioned
in the record.
- An "all databases" search
will search:
- Web of Science, Current Contents
Connect (1998-present), ISI Proceedings (1991-present), and Biosis Previews
(1980-present).
- Utilize the "author index"
to identify variations of author name (e.g. LONERGAN S M OR LONERGAN SM OR
LONERGAN STEVEN OR LONERGAN STEVEN M)
3. Current Contents Connect (1998
- present)
- Complete tables of contents and
bibliographic information from the world's leading scholarly journals and
books; also includes relevant, evaluated Web sites and documents. (Note: This
portion of our subscription will be discontinued sometime in 2008.)
4. ISI Proceedings (1991 - present)
- Proceedings of international conferences,
symposia, seminars, colloquia, workshops, and conventions.
5. BIOSIS
Previews (1980 - present)
- Life sciences and biomedical research
covering pre-clinical and experimental research, methods and instrumentation,
animal studies, and more.
- Indexes journal articles, books,
book chapters, patents, and meeting reports.
6. Journal
Citation Reports (1999 - 2006)
- Can search journals by subject
category or search for a specific journal. (Subject categories: Agriculture,
Dairy, Animal Science; Food Science & Technology)
- View impact factor and other performance
metrics.
E. AGRICOLA
- What: Published by the
National Agriculture Library
- Coverage: A
new indexing policy
went into effect on January 1, 2007.
- Free version available: http://agricola.nal.usda.gov/,
but strongly recommend searching AGRICOLA using the Silverplatter interface
via the Library's website.
- Can search simultaneously with
CAB Abstracts.
F. Food Science & Technology
Abstracts (FSTA)
- What: "world's
leading database of information on food science, food technology and nutrition."
Produced by the International Food Information Service (IFIS).
- Coverage: indexes
journals, conference proceedings, patents, books. Serial
publications indexed for 2008 (PDF)
- Dates: 1969 - present
- Search tips:
- Must click "Login"
in the left-hand sidebar.
- Quick Search is the default.
Date Range default is last 12 months.
- Use Advanced Search feature
to build more specific searches.
- The keywords in FSTA are very
different from the descriptors/identifiers used in CAB Abstracts. Use
the keyword selector to identify terms.
- Restricting a search to the
keywords field results in the following:
- KW = 'pork' AND KW = 'quality'
retrieves 1766 records (Compare to "meat
quality" and pork which searched all fields and retrieved
1634 records.)
G. PubMed
- Access via "Indexes &
Abstracts" - choose PubMed - ISU Affiliate link. This has the "Get
it@ISU" feature.

March 1996 - present
- Journal of Food Science, 2007
- present
- Journal of Animal Science,
1949 - present
- Journal of Agricultural and
Food Chemistry, 1970 - present
- Journal of Food Protection,
March 1996 - present
- MyNCBI Account - can save searches
and receive email alerts
H. Google Scholar
