1. NCBI Mini-courses are Cancelled

Unfortunately, I was informed on Friday, February 22 that the four NCBI mini-courses scheduled for March 25 & 26 at ISU were cancelled. Because of budget constraints at the NCBI, all educational activities have been cancelled. This includes all course offerings (e.g. Field Guide, mini-courses, PubChem course, Structures course). I received the following email from Dr. David Lipman, Director of the NCBI:

"I share your disappointment that NCBI training classes have been suspended. Unfortunately, we are in a period of very tight budgets and are having to make difficult decisions about reductions in our programs. While the classes have been eliminated for now, we did retain a number of people from our training and education group to assist in user support and to work on making our resources easier and more intuitive to use.

I am hopeful that budgets will improve and that at some point we will be able to reinstate many of our training activities."

I am so disappointed that the Library will not be able to sponsor this outstanding educational opportunity for the ISU research community this year. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will return in the future.

If you have questions regarding any of the NCBI resources, complete contact information is available here:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/About/glance/contact_info.html

2. New Journals!!

Last year, I (and Bill Wiese, former Veterinary Medicine librarian) contacted the departmental library liaisons regarding input on journals to which the Library did not subscribe. Your suggestions were compiled and were placed on the Library's "wish list" for new journals. In some cases, there were numerous requests for electronic access (rather than print) to certain titles (e.g. Cell Press journals).

I'm happy to report that a small amount of progress was made in fulfilling a few of your wishes.

The Library now has access to the following:

Format Change

If there are other journals that you feel would be useful, please email me your suggestions and I will add them to the "wish list." Also, the remaining "Cell Press" titles remain on the "wish list." I know there is widespread interest in having "Cell" and "Molecular Cell" online.

3. Do you receive NIH funding?

From the January-February 2008 NLM Technical Bulletin:

"On December 26, 2007, President Bush signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2007 (H.R. 2764) which directs the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to provide public access to its funded research. NIH implemented its Public Access Policy as a voluntary measure in 2005. This new mandate requires researchers funded by NIH to submit their manuscripts to PubMed Central®."

We were formed to address the ex-situ components of the Amphibian Conservation Action Plan (ACAP).

Our vision is the world’s amphibians safe in nature.

Our mission is working in partnerships to ensure the global survival of amphibians – focusing on those that cannot be safeguarded in nature."

International Field Guides Database (http://www.library.uiuc.edu/bix/fieldguides/main.htm)

Diane Schmidt, Biology Librarian at the University of Illinois, has created "a searchable database of field guides for plants, animals, and other objects in North America and around the world."

"The field guides are classified by type of organism and region covered. General guides which cover multiple groups of organism are listed in separate sections, Flora and Fauna for ecosystem-wide guides including both plants and animals, and Plants or Animals for guides which include groups of organisms from more than one category or which do not belong in another classification. Subjects were selected according to the number of field guides written about those groups of plants or animals. For instance, invertebrates are divided into two sections, Marine Invertebrates and Insects, and any groups not covered by those sections are lumped together in the Animals section."

Brain Biodiversity Bank (http://www.msu.edu/~brains/index.html)
