NCBI is holding a beta test for a new BLAST interface design. We invite you to try these pages and send us your comments and suggestions.

One major improvement is a new "Recent Results" feature that provides links to all of your recent BLAST search results. Another is "Saved
Strategies", which allows you to save BLAST forms with their parameters and use them later. Saved Strategies requires a free MyNCBI account, and is compatible with existing accounts. Signing in to MyNCBI also makes your Recent Results available from any browser.

Other improvements include:
- Easier navigation
- Simplified BLAST program selection
- Easy access to genome searches
- Improved Organism selection with species name auto-complete
- Automatic parameter adjustment to optimize for short queries
- A user-specifiable title for each BLAST job

The Beta test is available at:

or as a link from the BLAST home page at

GM Crops: The First 10 Years – Global Socio-economic and Environmental Impacts
Source: U.S. Grains Council

From press release:

"Biotech crops have produced a decade of improvements in yield and net farm income for grain, oilseed and cotton farmers. Now, according to a peer-reviewed study on the crops’ global economic and environmental impact, the benefits are “clear” – especially reductions in carbon dioxide emissions.

In 2005, herbicide-tolerant biotech crops planted using conservation tillage practices helped to retain carbon in the soil. Insect-resistant crops dramatically reduced the need for spraying, while also significantly reducing farm fuel usage. All told, biotech crops, planted during their 10th year of use on 87 million hectares (215 million acres) by 8.5 million farmers, reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 9 billion kg. (8.9 million tons). That’s the equivalent to removing nearly 4 million family cars from the road for an entire year, according to study author Graham Brookes, director of PG Economics Limited of Dorchester, United Kingdom."

New Web Tool to be Launched for Finding Funding Information

"The NIH has developed a Web-based tool that allows you to determine the dollars awarded to any one organization or department. The tool will allow you to download aggregate data, on a per fiscal year basis, so that you can conduct your own analysis."

Growing the Nation's Biotech Sector: A Regional Perspective

"This 2006 report presents updated data, examines growth trends, and identifies metropolitan areas with the largest and most concentrated employment in each of the bioscience subsectors identified in the 2004 report. These include agricultural feedstock and chemicals; drugs and pharmaceuticals; medical devices and equipment; and research, testing and medical laboratories. This report also identifies current key trends in state and regional initiatives to support the biosciences."
