Looking ahead to August

It's not too early to begin thinking about the fall semester. If you are teaching a course, I encourage you to think about how you can incorporate library resources or small research assignments into your class. This past spring, I had the pleasure of working with Dr. Warren Dolphin's Australia seminar course. The students are required to write a research paper over the course of the semester. I visited Dr. Dolphin's course and provided an introductory overview to library resources. I also met with each student individually during the semester to help assess their research progress and provide further advice. On the course evaluation, I asked the students what was the most significant thing they had learned about the library and its resources. These are just a few of the comments I received:

"I learned of Biosis Previews, perhaps the best scientific resource on absolutely everything!!!"

"I had never used the interlibrary loan before. I did not know how great of a resource it is and how easy it was to use."

"The interlibrary loan as well as searching for articles was helpful. I also used resources that I wouldn't normally use. Also, how to use search engines more efficiently."

"That would be using the electronic resources to look for and order journal material. I had always had problems figuring out how to do that, and now I am way more confident with it."

I would be happy to visit with you about how you can incorporate library resources or small research assignments into your class. Please email me, adinkelm@iastate.edu, for more information.
