1. Happy New Year from Your Librarian!
Since Bill Wiese's retirement in June 2007, I've been serving as the interim librarian for the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Department of Animal Science. I am happy to report that I have assumed these duties on a permanent basis. I have been at Iowa State University since October 2003. I am also currently serving as the subject specialist for Ecology, Evolutionary & Organismal Biology and Genetics, Development & Cell Biology.
I will be maintaining two offices; my contact information and office hours are listed below:
Veterinary Medicine Library: 2280
Veterinary Medicine Library
Phone: 294-2233
Veterinary Medicine Library Office Hours: I plan to be at this office all day
on Monday and Wednesday and most of Friday.
Parks Library: Room 152 Parks Library
Phone: 294-6943
Parks Library Office Hours:
I plan to be at this office on Tuesday and Thursday.
Please feel free to contact me via email/phone or stop by my office. I am looking forward to getting to know the faculty, students, and staff in the CVM and the Department of Animal Science. I am very interested in learning how the Library can better serve your needs. I especially enjoy teaching and would welcome the opportunity to provide instruction on the Library's many resources. I would be happy to visit your class, meet with your lab group, or schedule an individual appointment.
If you have any suggestions for book purchases or other items (e.g. instructional DVDs, society publications such as conference proceedings, etc.), please email them to me.
Have a great semester!
Sincerely,
Andrea Dinkelman
Assistant Professor/Science & Technology Librarian

The Library has gained electronic access to some additional American Chemical Society journals. ACS Chemical Biology and the Journal of Proteome Research are accessible from the e-journals & e-books link within the Library's website.
BioMed Central has launched Parasites & Vectors. "Parasites & Vectors is an open access, peer-reviewed online journal dealing with the biology of parasites, parasitic diseases, intermediate hosts and vectors. Parasites & Vectors expands upon the scope of two former BioMed Central publications, Kinetoplastid Biology and Disease and Filaria Journal, both of which ceased publication in December 2007. "
5. Online Renewal Now Available!!
Effective January 1, 2008, you can renew many of your ISU Library loans online. The online renewal option is available to all users (undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and extramural borrowers) via the "My Account" feature of the Library Catalog. Online renewal is available for any item that circulates for 1-day or more, except for items in the Leisure Media collection (i.e., popular DVD and VHS titles). Online renewal is not available for items that circulate on an hourly basis. Online renewal will be blocked (and a corresponding message will display) if an item is overdue, or if another user has placed a recall or a hold on the item. Also, you will be limited to three consecutive online renewals for any given item; after that, you'll need to present the item physically for renewal at one of our library service desks.
Over the past few years, online renewal has been the single-most frequently requested improvement to circulation-related services at Iowa State. The ISU Library is pleased to be able to offer this convenience.
Further information about changes to the Library Lending Policy are available here.
NCBI Mini-courses Return!
On Tuesday, March 25, 2008 and Wednesday, March 26, 2008, two presenters from the NCBI will return to ISU to offer four mini-courses. Based on the success of last spring's mini-courses, I decided to schedule additional mini-courses for 2008. The complete listing of mini-courses is available here: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/Class/minicourses/
Four mini-courses will be offered. Based on interest from last spring, most likely, "Microbial Genomes QuickStart" will be one of the courses. I am in the process of selecting the other courses. If you have an interest in some of the other mini-courses listed under the link above, please let me know.
Registration information will be available in February. Stay tuned!!

2006 U.S. Animal Health Report
From the press release:
"The U.S. Department of Agriculture today released the 2006 U.S. Animal Health Report, a national overview of domestic animal health in the United States. The report addresses the many components of the U.S. animal health infrastructure; approaches to animal disease surveillance, control and eradication; animal population demographics and new initiatives. In addition, the report describes significant epidemiologic events during the year.
The 2006 report includes a chapter on animal health research underway by collaborating agencies within USDA and U.S. schools of veterinary medicine. Also new this year is a chapter on international collaboration and capacity-building projects. This chapter describes numerous training, educational and outreach programs underway to safeguard and improve animal health globally."
