Save the date!!

On Thursday, April 5 and Friday, April 6, 2007, two biologists from the User Services Staff at the NCBI will be at Iowa State University. The Library is sponsoring four NCBI mini-courses. The following courses will be offered: Making Sense of DNA and Protein Sequences; Identification of Disease Genes; BLAST Quick Start; and Structure Analysis Quick Start. Each mini-course consists of a 1-hour lecture and a 1 1/2 hour computer lab session. Details regarding registration will be released in February.

New Journals

Parks Library has recently acquired electronic access to two Nature Publishing Group journals:

You can access both of these journals via the catalog or the e-journals list.

BMC Systems Biology

BioMed Central recently launched a new open access, peer-reviewed journal, BMC Systems Biology.

From the BioMed Central website:

"BMC Systems Biology is an Open Access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on systems-level analysis of biological events, whether experimental or theoretical, at the level of molecules, cells or organisms. The journal especially welcomes quantitative analyses and those that integrate different levels of information to understand how biological systems function or can be perturbed, as well articles involving the modeling or engineering of biological systems, and synthetic biology.

Biosis Previews

Biosis Previews has moved to the ISI Web of Knowledge interface. Biosis Previews covers virtually every life science discipline: agriculture, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, ecology, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, pharmacology, public health, and toxicology.

With the move to this interface, it is now possible to save searches and set up automatic email alerts. If you would like to have an overview of Biosis Previews and its search features, please contact me. I would be happy to provide a short presentation to your lab group.

New Electronic Reference Book

The Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, 2nd ed. is available electronically via the catalog.

Description from the Wiley website:

"The Encyclopedia of Statistical Sciences, Second Edition covers as much statistical content as possible in a handy, readily accessible manner. This second edition collects the entire original edition, plus supplements and updates in one searchable, continuous online product. New methodologies, written by the world’s leaders in statistics, are introduced in an easy-to-read format, accessible by a powerful search engine. Extensions of existing articles have also been incorporated in an effort to showcase the fluidity of the field. Thorough cross-referencing and bibliographies facilitate quick access to specific information and provide an indispensable platform for further study and research. There is no such compendium of information under one cover available today!"

News from the NCBI

For Entrez Gene users: The following message was posted on the Gene-announce listserv on January 5, 2007

Entrez Gene

"In the interest of providing more information about the genomic context of genes, Entrez Gene will start to report all RefSeqs (genomic, RNA and protein, as appropriate) from the last time a gene was annotated by NCBI. In other words, if a gene model is discontinued, the model gene will be reported as discontinued, but the link to its last annotation will be provided. Similarly, if a gene was annotated in a previous build, but not the current build, the location on the previous build will be reported.

Previously a 'Genomic regions, transcripts, and products' section was reported only for current annotation; the scope has now increased to 'most recent annotation'. The 'build' and build version will be reported explicitly in the hope of making it clear why the link points to a genomic RefSeq, or an annotation, that is no longer current.

This functionality will be made public in the next few days. We hope this will make it easier for you all to locate information about your favorite (but no longer current) model genes and RefSeqs.

NOTE: This implementation is not complete. We are phasing in the function with new annotation releases and all historical data will not be restored. As always, you can retrieve any discontinued RefSeq if you know the accession and version of the record."

New NCBI Database

dbGaP Genome Wide Association Database

The following text is from the dbGaP highlight on NCBI home page:

"NCBI's dbGAP (database of Genotype and Phenotype) [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=gap] provides data
from the Genome Wide Association (GWA) studies. The resource is intended to help elucidate the link between genes and disease. For each study, users have access to detailed information about the phenotypic variables measured and pre-computed associations between the subjects' phenotypes and genotypes."

Interested in learning how students can write better lab reports?

LabWrite - a resource for helping students learn about writing lab reports

"LabWrite is an online resource designed to help students take full advantage of one of the most important activities for learning in the sciences—writing good lab reports. But LabWrite is not just about writing lab reports. It shapes the entire lab experience as a learning experience by structuring each lab into four stages that provide the foundation for the students’ website: PreLab, InLab, PostLab, and LabCheck. We will describe these stages first and then the LabWrite Resources and LabWrite Modes, the application that allows students to work in all the stages online."

LabWrite was discussed in the Journal of College Science Teaching. This journal is available via the e-journals list.

Coral Reef Ecosystem Assessment and Monitoring Database

" The NOAA Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment will now provide public access to new digital photographs from six years of coral reef field studies. The online Coral Reef Ecosystem Database, developed and managed by the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, provides access to images of coral reef species and habitats, which were taken during studies in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands."
