I hope all of you had a relaxing summer! I encourage all of you to stop by the Library to see all of the changes that have taken place during the summer months. The Reference desk is no longer located in the main lobby. The desk is now located in the area just beyond the main lobby (north of the glass wall). This renovated space contains four multimedia production studios, scanners for public use, computers, tables equipped with electrical outlets for laptop users, and part of the Reference collection. (The remainder of the Reference collection is located in Tier 2.)
If you are including research assignments in your courses, consider inviting me to your class to discuss library resources such as the Web of Science, Biosis Previews, CAB Abstracts as well as relevant print sources. Please contact me via email or phone to schedule a session. I can visit your class, or depending on the class size, the Library's computer lab is also available. I can also meet with your lab group.
If you are advising new graduate students, encourage them to schedule an appointment with me to discuss resources relevant to their field of study. Past experience indicates this is time well spent.

Improved Access to Journal Articles - 
"Get it@ISU" is a name of a new tool offered by the Library. The tool provides a direct link from a database citation to the full text of the article (if available). You will see small "Get it@ISU" buttons in most of the Library's major databases. After clicking on this button, another window will open. If the Library has electronic access to the full-text, there will be a direct link to the article. If full-text is not available, click on the link to the ISU Library Catalog to determine whether the item is available in print. If neither the full-text or print is available, click on the link to request the item from Interlibrary Loan.
In most cases, clicking on the link to the full-text will go directly to the article (if available). However, in my testing, I've noticed that sometimes the link goes to the journal's home page or a table of contents. Please report any problems you encounter. On Wednesday, March 26, 2008 and Thursday, March 27, 2008, two presenters from the NCBI will return to ISU to offer four mini-courses. Based on the success of last spring's mini-courses, I decided to schedule additional mini-courses for 2008. I have not yet determined which mini-courses will be offered. Based on interest from last spring, most likely, "Microbial Genomes QuickStart" will be one of the courses. If you have an interest in some of the other mini-courses listed under the link above, please let me know.

"The primary goal of this work is to convert genome-encoded protein sequences into musical notes in order to hear auditory protein patterns. Although there have been previous efforts to do this, one of the main problems has involved the large jumps between consecutive notes in a 20 note range (2.5 octaves) that results from a one-to-one amino acid-to-musical note assignment. Some other concerns include assigning rhythm, dynamics, and accompaniment according to the characteristics of the protein sequence."
