News from the NCBI

Public Collections of DNA and RNA Sequence Reach 100 Gigabases - August 22, 2005

There are two new databases being developed by the NCBI:

PubMed Tip

There is a growing collection of free, full-text books on the PubMed web site:

Click on the "Books" link in the upper right-hand corner. This virtual bookshelf includes titles such as: Genomes by T.A. Brown and Immunobiology by Charles Janeway. Check it out!

New Open Access Electronic Journals

Journal of RNAi and Gene Silencing (http://libpubmedia.co.uk/RNAiJ/RNAiJHome.htm)

From the journal's "Aims and Scopes"

The general areas covered by the Journal include:

Cancer Informatics (http://www.la-press.com/caninfo.htm)

"Cancer Informatics is an open-access research journal where cancer researchers can find rapid communication of the latest bioinformatics and computational biology advances. A focus will be on the clinical translation of that knowledge to increase the efficacy of practicing oncologists, radiologists and pathologists. "

Plant Methods (http://www.plantmethods.com/) Hosted by BioMed Central.

From the "About Plant Methods" page:

" Technological innovation is probably the most important catalyst for progress in any scientific discipline. Yet to date there has been no plant journal specialising on the development and application of new techniques. The result is that technical creativity has not being given the high-profile platform it needs and deserves. Plant Methods aims to redress the balance by promoting and rapidly disseminating technological advances in plant biology. The goals of the journal will be to stimulate the development and adoption of new and improved techniques and research tools and, where appropriate, to promote consistency of methodologies for better integration of data from different laboratories."

PLoS Genetics (http://genetics.plosjournals.org/perlserv/?request=index-html&issn=1553-7404)

This journal made its debut in July. "PLoS Genetics reflects the full breadth and interdisciplinary nature of genetics and genomics research by publishing outstanding original contributions in all areas of biology."

The Canary Database (http://canarydatabase.org/)

This database is a collaboration between Yale University Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Yale University School of Medicine.

From the site:

"The Canary Database aims to overcome scientific barriers which limit the use of animal sentinel data for early recognition of human environmental health hazards. These barriers include difficulty in locating animal sentinel studies in current biomedical databases and a lack of communication between human health and animal health professionals.

The Canary Database will overcome such barriers by making the scientific literature on animals as sentinels of human environmental hazards more accessible in a single location."
