5.3.0 Educating Iowans
In “Returning to Our Roots: the Engaged Institution,” the Kellogg Commission on the Future of
the Land-Grant Universities issued a compelling call for public-supported universities to engage fully
with individuals, organizations, and communities in a process through which all parties participate and
benefit in a substantive manner. The Kellogg Commission report further stated that with full engagement,
land-grant and state-supported universities could more effectively impact the quality of life for individuals.
Iowa State University’s 2005-2010 strategic plan states several goals that explain the institution’s commitment to educating Iowans. Included in these goals are the following:
• Partner with K-12 schools and community colleges to facilitate transfer to and student success at Iowa State University
• Strengthen educational and outreach programs aimed at Iowa’s economic, workforce, and technology development
• Strengthen our partnerships and communications with Iowans to better identify, address, and solve problems
• Promote the wise use of Iowa's resources and build a sustainable future
• Expand learning opportunities for Iowans of all ages
These goals clearly require full engagement in an effort to enhance the quality of life and expand learning opportunities for Iowans. While many of the efforts discussed in earlier “Engagement and Service” sections describe outreach and extension efforts, this section of the self-study concentrates on ways that Iowa State enhances educational programs across the state.
