Development of human resources is critical to the success of all programs at Iowa State University. Meeting current needs and future challenges requires a thorough collection and analysis of data, much of which is accomplished at ISU by Institutional Research. Additionally, data on faculty salaries and peer comparisons is available. Iowa State University offers faculty and staff many opportunities for learning, growth and professional development. Professional Development Programs for Faculty Recognizing that professional development should occur at all career stages, a variety of programs exist to enhance the capacity of each faculty member to contribute to the mission of the University. The faculty handbook details opportunities for recognition and development. As mentioned, various activities designed to enhance teaching skills are offered through CELT. The Center also provides grants and fellowships that provide funds for innovation in curriculum development and instructional development resources to improve courses. Research capacity is enhanced through a variety of internal grants. Also available are special topic grants (for example, for high performance computing) and grants sponsored by University centers (e.g., Center for Excellence in Arts and Humanities). Iowa State's commitment to globalization is evidenced in foreign travel grants, internationalization grants, and faculty opportunities for study abroad and exchanges. In addition, faculty who want to extend their scholarship either on- or off-campus may apply for Study in a Second Discipline or a Faculty Professional Development Assignment. Commitment to diversity is demonstrated through programs such as Shared Leadership for Institutional Change (SLIC) and the Administrative Internship program. There are also a variety of orientation activities specifically for new staff, for example NSO (New Staff Orientation) for Extension employees. New graduate students participate in special orientation activities, not only as new students but also often as new Iowa State employees. In addition, graduate students have the opportunity to be involved in the Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) program. Programs for Professional and Scientific and Merit Staff Tuition grants and professional development grants are available for academic courses offered for credit, short courses, workshops and seminars for eligible staff.
