1.3.2 Decision Making Mechanisms

The President has delegated to the vice presidents authority for administering and recommending changes to policies in their respective areas. Some policies require approval by the Faculty Senate and the President's Cabinet, while others require approval by the Board of Regents. University Counsel has a key role in providing legal guidance to ensure compliance with Iowa code and federal statutes.

Faculty participation in decision−making has also improved over the past few years. Faced with significant budget cutbacks, the President three years ago created a Budget Advisory Committee that includes faculty representation.   He also meets regularly with the leadership of the faculty and professional staff to make sure that they are well informed on important University matters. More recently, a “Policy on Academic Reorganization” was developed and approved by the Faculty Senate. This will allow for realignment of academic units as deemed appropriate by the faculty and administration.

Approximately 35 active, university−wide committees provide opportunities for faculty, staff and students to participate in the University's decision−making process. Membership on these committees is representative of each of the colleges, major units, and other constituent groups on campus.
