4. Periodic Review of Tenured Faculty Members
In order to maintain faculty vitality and flexibility, and as
part of the on-going faculty development process, tenured faculty
members are evaluated comprehensively by their peers and DEOs at
least every five years.2 Faculty members who serve as DEOs may be
evaluated within this process. However, their administrative
responsibilities are evaluated as part of college administrative
review processes, which are separate from these peer reviews.
The areas to be covered in the periodic review should be based on
the faculty member's assigned duties, as determined by position
responsibilities and in negotiation with the DEO. The peer review
should complement the DEO's comprehensive review, as well as the
annual review process. It should address the faculty member's
performance in teaching, research/artistic activities,
extension/professional practice (if part of the individual's
role), institutional service and other direct and indirect
contributions to the university community and its mission, as
well as achievements in scholarship. The review criteria should
be based on the departmental criteria used for promotion and
tenure. Each department is responsible for developing and
implementing a plan for its periodic peer review process. See
section below on Departmental Plans for Periodic Review of
Tenured Faculty.
