Dr. Gary Michael Tartakov, professor of art and design, has been named the interim director of the African American Studies
Program in Iowa State University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Tartakov teaches the general survey of art history and the history of modern design in the College of Design, as well as courses in the art of Asia, and particularly the Art of India. His main research interests include art of ancient and contemporary India, Orientalism, and the imagery of India's Dalits (commonly known as "untouchables").
He is also affiliated with the Women's Studies Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
A national search is ongoing for a permanent director of the African American Studies Program. The program offers an interdisciplinary minor and is one of four ethnic studies program in the new Center for American Intercultural Studies.
