Disabilities Statement:  If a student has a disability that qualifies under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and requires accommodations, he/she should contact the Disability Resources (DR) office for information on appropriate policies and procedures. DR is located on the main floor of the Student Services Building, Room 1076; the phone number for DR is 515-294-6624.

Homework and quizzes:  There will be approximately 10 quizzes given, each worth 20 points.  Each quiz will fall on a Friday.  In addition, I will collect about 13 or 14 homework assignments, also worth 20 points each.  I will record only 20 homework/quiz scores, so your worst quizzes or homework assignments in excess of 20 will be omitted. (e.g. If I give 10 quizzes and 13 assignments, this gives a total of 23 homework/quiz scores, and so I will omit your lowest 3 of these scores).

Exams:  We will have 3 in-class exams throughout the course worth 100 points apiece.  The final exam will be 2 hours long and worth 150 points.

Homework policies:  I encourage you to start early on homework assignments (please do not wait until the night before to start).  I am happy to answer questions on homework in class and during my office hours, but I will not answer any questions on homework on the day it is due.  I also encourage you to hand in assignments in class on the day it is due.  However, I will accept your homework on the due date as late as 5:00 PM.  If you turn it in later than that, you will receive only 50% of your homework score.  If it is more that two days late, or if I post the solutions to the assignment on the website, you will receive no credit on that assignment.  You are more than welcome to use any calculator of your choice for homework.  Even though I encourage the use of calculators to check arithmetic, you must show your work in doing the problems to get credit.  If you write down an answer and don’t show your work, you will receive no credit for that problem.

Quiz and exam policies: Only scientific calculators will be allowed on quizzes and exams (no graphing calculators will be allowed).  There will be no make-ups on the quizzes.  If you miss a quiz, you get a zero on that quiz.  Make-up exams will be given only on rare occasions.  If an unavoidable circumstance arises, please notify me before the exam to have your excuse approved by me.  I may require some form of documentation for the excuse.

Other Expectations:  I will expect you to know how to do all of the homework.  In particular, make sure you keep up with the practice problems that I list on the homework page.  Your quizzes will be based entirely on these problems.  I will also expect you to hand in to me nicely written homework solutions.  One of my pet peeves is grading sloppy homework.  I greatly appreciate those of you who have pride in your work and make it look professional.  Finally, I expect you to respect your classmates while in the classroom by not being distractive.  Your classmates are paying as much (if not more) money as you are to be here, so pay attention.

Attendance:  I deeply encourage good attendance, so I am allotting 50 points for attendance.  Here’s the breakdown on how I will assign attendance points.
