PEAK (Pricing Electronic Access to Knowledge)Contact
peakgroup@umich.eduDescription
"PEAK will explore both bundling and nonlinear pricing opportunities afforded by electronic access. The key research objective is generalizability to other user populations and other scholarly materials.""The University of Michigan (UM) and Elsevier Science are working together on PEAK. PEAK permits UM to create and manage a host service for all 1110 journals published by Elsevier, including the North Holland, Butterworth, and Pergamon imprints. This experiment extends the cooperative relationship between the two organizations which began with UM's participation in The University LIcensing Project (TULIP). The PEAK experiment will last a minimum of 18 months during which time UM will offer host services to other institutions and organizations under different pricing options. Initial services ... [began] in summer 1997."
"After extensive discussion with library collection experts and potential participants, the [PEAK]project team [has] decided to offer three bundles. The first two options mirror the best-known traditional options; the third choice is more novel.
- Per article - Individual users can purchase unlimited access to a specific article for a fixed price."
- Traditional subscription - Institutional and individual users can purchase unlimited access to a set of articles that correspond to Elsevier print-on-paper journal titles.
- Generalized subscription - Institutional users can purchase unlimited access to a set of 120 articles selected after the fact by the users. Individual users can purchase smaller bundles."
"The goal of the PEAK field experiment is to generate rich empirical evidence on user behavior and on provider experience with various bundling and pricing options. PEAK will extend the existing theoretical work in these areas to more realistic situations. The space for electronic access bundling and pricing structures is immense, however, and many field trials will be required to explore even a limited set of important alternatives. Continued collaborative efforts between libraries and publishers will build on the knowledge gained through this experiment."
