Summary:
The European Pollen Databse (EPD) is a database of the NOAA Paleoclimatology
Program for Modern and Fossil Pollen Data, a program that "...distributes
the product of various collaborative efforts to collect and organize pollen
records from around the world. These data include the pollen counts and
related information, as well as several different derived data sets."
Upon accessing the site, the user will find site history information and a
list of site creators, a link to EPD meeting notes from 1996, and an area
devoted to accessing data within various formats. Each access method has
its own link: (1) Tilia and ASC formats; (2) EPD Base Tables; and (3) EPD
Base
Tables at Medias. Within this same area, the user will find the site's
search engine link, a read file (for information on Paradox files), and a
link on file retrieval.
Users should select the search engine link to access the database; a
detailed
query page then appears with the following fields: (1) match limit number;
(2) site name; (3) bottom older than year B.P.; (4) bottom younger than year
B.P.; (5) latitude/longitude; (6) country; (7) principal investigator; (8)
elevation; and (9) results types (common-70 Types [counts], complete data
[counts], and pollen diagram). Users should fill in applicable fields;
matching results will be an ftp list of files offering pollen summary data
and pollen diagrams. Files must be downloaded for viewing; users should
refer to the main page for links concerning retrieval and interpretation of
results. At the bottom of the site's main page is a new database additions
area and a link for e-mailing the site's creator.
The site is sponsored by the NOAA Paleoclimatology Program; National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); Boulder, Colorado.
