Virtual Advisory Boards
We believe that the most appropriate means by which World Wide Web
(WWW) resources can be selected and managed is via the Internet itself. As a world-wide network,
the Internet is the ideal medium by which individuals can collaborate directly,
personally or within groups, at the global level.
To further develop CyberStacks(sm), we seek individuals interested in serving as members of one of four virtual
advisory boards:
- Automation and Systems
- Selection and Collection Development
- Cataloging and Technical Services
- Reference and Public Services
Selection and Collection Development
Members of the Selection and Collection Development Advisory Board would be concerned
with the following types of issues:
- Identification of potential sources of WWW and
other Internet resources for review and possible incorporation within CyberStacks(sm)
- Development of appropriate criteria for the evaluation of resources for
inclusion with CyberStacks(sm)
- Recruitment of subject specialists to identify and evaluate candidate resources
- Coordination of the evaluation of candidate resources by designated subject specialists
- Final review of recommended and evaluated resource for incorporation
within CyberStacks(sm)
Cataloging and Technical Services
Members of the Cataloging and Technical Services Advisory Board would be concerned
with the following types of issues:
- Recruitment of technical service specialists to prepare preliminary
resource summaries, search statements and classifications
- Coordination of preparation of resource summaries, search statements and
classifications
- Coordination of the assignment of appropriate Library of Congress
Subject Headings and subheadings to CyberStacks(sm) resources
- Final review of resource summary and search instructions
- Final review of classification and categorization of evaluated resource
- Final testing coordination of the maintenence of links to selected resources
Automation and Systems
Members of the Automation and Systems Advisory Board would be concerned
with the following types of issues:
- Coordination of the incorporation of new resources within the CyberStacks(sm)
scheme
- Coordination of the refinement and improvement of CyberStacks(sm) HTML
coding, format and organization
- Coordinate the development of appropriate forms to faciliate the nomination
of new resources for CyberStacks(sm), the review of candidate resources by
cooperating specialists, the incorporation of accepted resources within the
appropriate CyberStacks(sm) category and classification, and general feedback from participants
- Investigation of the applicability of research efforts to provide
automatic identification and classification of candidate resources
- Investigation of the creation of a hypertexted thesaurus to provide
enhanced access to CyberStacks(sm) resources
- Investigation of the creation and incorporation of an alphabetical
listing of assigned subject headings and associated subheadings
- Identification, review and testing of WWW browsers that may enhance access
and use of CyberStacks(sm)
Reference and Public Services
Members of the Reference and Public Services Advisory Board would be concerned
with the following types of issues:
- Coordination of a periodic review and testing of CyberStacks(sm) interface
- Coordination of public demonstration, instruction and promotion of the
CyberStacks(sm) service
- Recommendation of candidate titles
- Coordination of a periodic evaluation and refinement of resource summaries and search instructions
