While this Position Paper reflects the professional and personal views of
Gerry McKiernan, some of the ideas presented are derived from discussions
with colleagues at Iowa State University. Early and recent discussions with
Greg Wool, science cataloger with the ISU library, helped crystalize our
thinking with regard to options for display of record data, and was
influenced in part by both his published and unpublished work. We are
particularly grateful to Greg for summarizing the papers presented at the OCLC
Internet Cataloging Project Colloquium held at the American Library
Association Mid-Winter meeting held in San Antonio, Texas on January 19,
1996, which we were unable to attend due to the Blizzard of '96 in Des Moines,
Iowa. We are also grateful to Greg for his report on the presentation
of Jerome McDonough, School of Library and Information Studies, University
of California, Berkeley, in which McDonough further articulated his USMARC DTD
proposal at ALA Mid-Winter on January 20, 1996.
We wish to fully acknowledge the contribution of Andy Ames, our graduate
research assistant, who helped us articulate, clarify and implement a number
of the ideas presented in this Position Paper. Without his assistance,
neither this Position Paper nor the CyberStacks(sm) project would be as robust.
