The controversial remarks quoted by Harvard President, Lawrence Summers, were discussed.  “The president of Harvard University sparked an uproar at an academic conference when he said that innate difference between men and women might be one reason fewer women succeed in science and math careers.  Summers also questioned how much of a role discrimination plays in the dearth of female professors in science and engineering at elite universities.” The Boston Globe.

V.  Campus Climate Implementation Committee – Larry Genalo

Larry Genalo joined UCW to report the progress of the campus climate implementation committee.  Larry presented the presentation that was given to the President’s Advisory Committee on Diversity.

Larry shared the implementation committees’ preliminary report of actions of the strategic plan for diversity, equity, and community 2006-2011.  This 33-page document lists the actions that have been developed from the five strategic goals that have been identified.  The subcommittees for each strategic goal are working to further define the actions.

After the presentation, question was asked, if the committee is addressing improving the status of women at ISU?  Larry identified that there is a whole section of recruitment and retention.  In this section, there is included, practices to improve accountability and leadership.  This preliminary report will be sent to the committee.  Please review this report, and if you have any suggestions, these can be directed to Penny Rice.
