SCHI was organized and incorporated in 1968
to address the housing needs of low-income families in Story County.
SCHI currently is and always has been an
all-volunteer organization with no paid staff.
The organization owns eight housing units
on four properties in Ames (two duplexes, one single family home,
and a tri-plex) which they rent to low-income families.
As a volunteer, non-profit organization,
SCHI works with other non-profits to address the entire range
of housing needs for low-income families.
SCHI finished their 3-plex apartment building
at 414 S. 4th in December 2004. The county's high school building
trades class oversaw a good portion of the construction. Habitat
for Humanity volunteers assisted with painting and other finishing
work.
