A note on terminology. It's no simple matter to decide on which names or terms to use to refer to groups of people. The terms above are those that I've decided to use throughout this web site, but it's important to recognize that these terms may not be accepted by all people within that particular group. For example, interchangeable terms for "U.S. Latino" might be "Hispanic American," "Hispanic," or simply "Latino." Of course, within that somewhat generic group name specific identities such as "Chicano," "Puerto Rican," "Dominican American," and many others are hidden from view. Similarly, the acronym "LGBT" or the hybrid term "LesBiGay," coined to reflect issues pertaining broadly to lesbians, bisexual people, gay men, and transgendered folks, may give some people the impression that the concerns and issues of these distinct groups may somehow be identical and interchangeable. They're not. There are important differences as well as similarities, both equally valid viewpoints, and the same can be said about any group on this web site.

These are just two examples of terms used on this web site that may be acceptable to some but rejected by others. While I recognize this multiplicity and complex specificity of naming (and in real life I participate in it myself!), for the sake of clarity and organizational consistency, I have decided to use the broad terms listed above, and decided not to alternate terms (e.g., using "American Indian" on some pages and "Native American" on others). Resources described on the pages do indicate if they pertain to a particular group, say, Korean American, rather than the larger group. If you have comments or suggestions, I would certainly like to hear from you. Let me know what you think.
