What
does "US Latino" mean?
The Latino population within the US is comprised mainly of Mexican Americans
(or Chicanos), Puerto Ricans, and Cubans; significant numbers of Latinos of
Caribbean, Central or South American descent have long been present in the US
as well, and continue to increase. There is a growing number of library resources
pertaining specifically to the study of US Latinos. Resources with the words
"Latino" or "Hispanic" in their titles often vary in the definition of those
words. These resources may actually focus on one or a few Latino groups, or
expand the definition to its utmost to include Latin Americans, Spaniards, and
others. Readers will want to make sure to consult resources that provide adequate
and reliable coverage of the US Latino group(s) in which they are interested.
Due to the great diversity among Latinos as a group, however, many aspects of
US Latino experience and histories have yet to be written.
