Getting Started on Macs

This page explains how to start MATLAB and use a text editor in connection with MATLAB. You could use any editor you wish, but let's suppose you use the text editor built into MATLAB.

Breaking news

Trouble with Fetch: as far as I can see, the Fetch and Telnet programs have not been updated here, meaning you cannot transfer files to or log into Project Vincent easily. The best way around this is probably using a floppy disk for now, or using Webmail and attaching your files (mail to yourself).

Start MATLAB

  1. If you see a window named 'Launcher' on the screen, go to step 2. If not, click and hold the apple at the left of the menu bar at the top of your screen. The second item is 'Launcher'. Pull the mouse down and launch it.
  2. Select the button 'Math Applications'. Among the application icons that appear there is one called MATLAB.
  3. Click on it.
  4. See the MATLAB page for more information and sample M-files.

Mac text editors

The 'Command' key mentioned below is the key with an apple left of the space bar. Command-X means holding the command key down and hitting x. The following facts are common to all Mac editors.

If you use the built-in MATLAB editor, you can execute an M-File by hitting Command-E.

You also need a web browser for downloading files. If you save your files in your Project Vincent space, you need the Fetch program for transferring your files to and fro. Both are in the Launcher window under 'Network'.
