Mathematics 297 - Intermediate Topics in Elementary Mathematics

News

These pages will still be updated whenever there is a problem with WebCT, but normally the latest news will only be on WebCT. To make sure you have the latest version of this page, press the Refresh/Reload button.

Whenever you discover a mathematical error in the course packet or in anything I put on the web, please tell me, either in class, in office hour or via email. I will award you some homework points of extra credit if you are the first one to report a particular error.

Classes

Math 297 M W F 9.00-10.15 in CARVER 002

The first class is Monday, August 20, 2007, and the last class is Friday, Dec 7, 2007. There are no classes on Labor Day (Sep 3) and during Thanksgiving Break (Nov 19-23). In the week Dec 10-14, there will be the Final exam. I will publish the exact date here as soon as I know it. You can also check the registrar's exam schedule page.

Homework and Schedule

This is Schedule 1 - I'll hand out printed copies in class. Make sure to label all your assignments with the title (eg homework #1), and your name. Start each assignment on a new page.

Additional resources

WebCT is a tool for publishing your grades, plus some extra material for assignments and exams.

The Math Help Room is staffed by students who can help with questions, too. Will open the second week of the semester.

Consulting Hours are the times when you can drop into my office to see me in person. Apart from these regular hours, you can also make appointments via email. In that case, please check my schedule and suggest a time. If the door is shut, please knock!

Here is a syllabus. You do not have to print this out - it will always be here!

Textbook?

Owing to the very diverse range of topics that we will cover in this class, there is no single textbook that would cover all of them. Instead of having three textbooks, we have therefore put a lot of material into the course packet, and more on WebCT. Since this will be your third mathematics course, we trust you also to have enough experience to take notes during class and to make sure you get notes from a friend should you have missed a class period (or see me during office hours!).

Catalog description

3 credits. Prerequisites are enrollment in elementary education and grade of C- or better in 196 or enrollment as mathematics major and admission to teacher education. Topics include

Overarching goals are improved mathematical reasoning and use of technology to learn and teach mathematics.

Disabilities Statement

If a student has a disability that qualifies under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and requires accommodations, she/he should contact the Disability Resources (DR) office for information on appropriate policies and procedures. DR is located on the main floor of the Student Services Building, Room 1076; their phone is 515-294-6624. If you are considering this, I recommend talking to me early in the process, too.

Please put 'Math 297' at the beginning of your subject line. Then add some meaningful subject like 'meeting' or 'grade' or 'homework'. This really helps me a lot!
