Text: Calculus (9th Edition), Varberg, Purcell and Rigdon

Course Objectives:  See http://orion.math.iastate.edu/calculus/obj/objectives_Calc_I.pdf  for course objectives.  You are required to have a graphing calculator for this class, for example a TI-86, TI-89 or TI-92.

Evaluation: There will be 2 exams during the semester, as well as a departmental midterm and comprehensive departmental final.  Every week I will assign daily homework which will be collected in class the following Monday.  I will assign a large number of problems each week and randomly select several problems to grade.  I will drop the two lowest homework scores, hence I will NOT accept late homework.  If time permits we may do some in-class group assignments.  The points will be assigned as follows, for a total of 600 points:

Exam 1    100 points
Midterm  100 points
Exam 2    100 points
Final        150 points
Homework   150 points

The grades will be based on the typical scale of:
100-90 A
89-80   B
79-70   C
69-60   D
59-0     F

with +/- grades assigned  at my discretion.  Success in this class depends upon attendance and participation, so your grade may be lowered if you have excessive absences.

Academic Dishonesty:  You are encouraged to work together on the homework, however the work you submit must be your own.  Cheating on the exams absolutely will not be tolerated and if caught you will receive a 0 for the exam.

Make-up Exams: In general, make-up exams will not be given unless you provide documentation for an emergency; the definition of "emergency" will be at my discretion.

Help: Calculus can be a very difficult subject, so if you have questions please ask them, either in class or during my office hours.  If you cannot make my scheduled office hours, e-mail me and we can arrange another time to meet.  I also encourage you to use the Math Help Room in Carver 385, and to work with your classmates.

Disabilities: If a student has a disability that qualifies under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act, that student should contact the Disabilities Resource office located on the main floor of the Student Service Building in Room 1076.  The phone number is 515-294-6624.
