Application for Instructor Positions
Program Goals
The ISU Summer Youth Fitness Program has two primary goals: (1) to provide an opportunity for girls and boys in grades K - 6 to participate in sports and related activities which facilitate their physical growth, motor skill development, and physical fitness; and (2) to develop knowledge and attitudes towards physical activity which will provide a basis for continued interest in physical activity and fitness.
The program consists of four days a week of physical activity, including instruction in aquatics (daily swimming lessons), tumbling and gymnastics, creative/rhythmic movement, various sports and games, and physical fitness activities. The emphasis for the program is on experiencing many different types of physical activities. All children are expected to participate in an activity if physically able to do so. An informal structure for activities is maintained within the limits of program goals and the children's safety.
Dr. Richard Engelhorn of the Department of Health and Human Performance at ISU is the Program Director. The instructors are physical educators and elementary specialists who are experienced in the types of activities included in the program. Aquatics and gymnastics specialists will coordinate and instruct those areas in conjunction with each group leader. Instructor-student ratios will vary from 1:12 in the sports and games to 1:7 in swimming and gymnastics.
Program Activities
The activities of the program are conducted in the Forker Building (Physical Education Building) and playing fields adjacent to the building. Swimming and gymnastic instruction or creative/rhythmic movement is provided daily. Volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, and other team sport activities will be featured along with racquet sport activities such as badminton, tennis and paddleball. Various active games and physical fitness activities will make up the fitness aspect of the program.
The instructional aspect of the program is designed to meet the needs of children by considering their abilities, maturation, and developmental levels. All children are provided the opportunity to be successful in the various movement activities. Children of varying skill abilities will be able to interact effectively within the framework of the program's activities.
Participants will be grouped in four age classifications of 18-22 students per group. The younger girls and boys will take part in activities which facilitate the acquisition of basic movement skills and provide an awareness of their physical abilities. The older children will participate in more individual and team sport activities. All activities are conducted with fitness and/or motor skill development goals in mind.
The program will run from June 9 to July 31, 2008 from Monday to Thursday, 1:10 - 4:30 pm.
On Wednesday, July 30 the program will not meet from 1:10 - 4:30 pm, rather an open house will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 pm for families. During this time children will follow a modified schedule to illustrate some of the activities used during the summer.
Sample Weekly Schedule of Activities
A typical week may look something like this. The activities each group uses for a given sport or game depends upon the age group. The older age groups may play a regular game whereas the younger groups are more likely to play games which just use the skills. In all games and activities the atmosphere created by the instructors emphasizes participation and fun and not competition.

Parents watching children playing Goalsberg at the Open House. Goalsberg is a complex tag game that children love to play. It involves lots of running as well as a team strategy and daring. This game was introduced by an instructor during our first year in 1986 and has become a favorite of all since then.
